We're off to the Compak Golden Bean Roasting Comp
Toot, toot! Will and I are getting ready to jump a train down to Portland for the annual Compak Golden Bean coffee roasting competition! The competition has been running for 10 years in Australia with this being its second year in North America.
We know the crew from Australia and they are a passionate bunch of coffee nuts, truly dedicated to growing the specialty coffee industry. After a lot of education and judging, like all Aussies, they love to cement this growth with a great party or three!
In terms of seminars we’re most looking forward to seeing our friend Willem Boot’s seminar on roasting exotic and Geisha coffees, as well as Ben Weiner’s session on establishing direct trade relationships from Gold Mountain Coffee Roasters. Other sessions include grinder analysis and machine temperature profiling and a session by an old colleague Kristian on financing your coffee roasting operation.
And if we still have any steam (of the caffeine variety) left there’s an extensive Green Bean Zone on the Saturday morning where we’ll be able to cup and sample a broad variety of coffees.
We were toying with entering our espresso coffee but we’ll probably wait for next year to make our way to the judging table! Best of luck to our coffee roaster friends who have entered and to all of you who haven’t… what are you waiting for!
For any Vancouver roasters keeping things last minute (the way we like it) - we'll happily play coffee chauffeur if you need an entry taken down.
Promise we won't drink your beans... until the ride back anyway.
